hysiological….the most basic of needs to be satisfied before we progress to the next level up each time, so first and foremost humans needs are for things like eating, sleeping, breathing, drinking water, having sex. These are what we crave at the lowest but most important level. Linked to our ability to survive. Next level is needing….
– safety. The need to protect or defend ourselves is fundamental in life too. So securing a job, house, defending your family, developing beliefs and values, staying healthy all contribute towards this level. The next level to be satisfied is….
– love and belonging. Having satisfied the most basic levels, the next level revolves around the need for love, a family and intimacy figure highly. Beyond love and belonging comes the need for…..
– esteem. Confidence, self esteem, self respect, respect in others and respect by others. Gaining a sense of achievement is important at this level….and finally once all other needs are met we crave….
– self actualisation. Creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, free from prejudices. Maslow suggested we adopt the level which applies most to us at any given point in time, and needs can rapidly change. So, if you lost your job, family or loved one, or home you go back to the start or level that applies. Then once satisfied continue with the next level….and so on.
